The Profit ★★☆☆☆

Review of 'The Profit' which can be found here on the Online Short Films.

Length: 02:30
Written by Daniel Wood & Rebecca Vaughan & directed by Ross Turner
Genre: Sci-Fi
Date: 2011
Rating: ★★☆☆☆

Logline: A scientist creates a cloning machine. Then gets greedy.

This is nothing new. Its one of those ideas that's been floating around the short film circuit for years so minus stars for unoriginal content. The production itself is fairly well done though. There are some nice camera shots, soundtrack is fitting and the performance by Tina Baston is competent. No dialogue was the obvious choice as this is a one man show and Baston does well to convey emotion without it. Structurally too, the pace is well balanced and paced.

Good points aside, it is let down by the plot itself. There won't be many in the audience that won't see the ending coming. Visually too, the stage setting is a little drab, inexpensive and impressive. It makes it look like we could all set up our very own home cloning system in our back offices. It doesn't quite fit with the high powered hum that runs along side the action (unless the power station is just out of shot). Special effects are average but do the necessary job but the costume department could have put more effort in.

The ending did make me smile though.

Best Bit: The punchline ending.

Worst Bit: See it all before.

Final thought: Where did she get that plate of fresh fish from?
