Love Hate ★★★★★

Review of 'Love Hate' which can be found here at the BBC Film Network.

Length: 19:44
Written & directed by Dylan & Blake Ritson
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2009
Rating: ★★★★★

Logline: A meek charity worker falls in love with the physical embodiment of his own repressed hatred.

This is an excellent premise for a film. Two extreme emotions pitted against each other makes for good comedy as well as providing food for thought.

Starring a superb Ben Whishaw as mild mannered Tom and equally brilliant Hayley Atwell as his scheming seductress, Hate. These two are great on screen and not only breathe life into superbly crafted dialogue but interpret all those non-dialogue moments just as easily.

I really enjoyed the clear three part structure to this which throws in a nice twist at each turn. Starting with Whishaw's hilariously increasing uneasiness with Atwell who is the disturbingly confident stranger who's invaded his space, plot develops with the reveal of who she really is and how her obnoxious presence slowly grows into familiarity, acceptance and finally into love. Complications arise in the final part when Tom's subconscious progresses into self loathing which manifests in Hates poor treatment of her now dedicated boyfriend.

I much appreciated that not only was Tom's problems ever worsening, but that the writers gave us a clear undisputed conclusion instead of taking the easier option, as so many do, of leaving us with an ambiguous ending.

The production is also very high standard in every aspect. Time comes close to TV sitcom length, so take a bit longer to watch than my usual reviews, but I suspect this film may have been produced with a television broadcast in mind to start with. You'll be too engaged with the story to really care about the length anyways. Overall, top scores on every level. Would like to read the script sometime.

Best Bit: Twist at the end screaming sequel!

Worst Bit: The length, I suppose.

Final thought: Wonder what other emotions this guy could manifest to further f**k up his life?
