Logline: An unfortunate home video enthusiast gets more than he bargained for while filming at the beach.

Apologies but I couldn't find a copy of this to embed anywhere so you'll have to follow the link to view it and I highly recommend that you do. I remember getting shown this at university as part of the Napier MA Screenwriting course as a prime example of a great short and i don't think there was anyone in class who disagreed.

Not only is this good filmmaking on a budget but it shows that using low tech equipment doesn't always hinder a project but can in fact enhance it. I always think that if the story is good enough, it doesn't matter what level of equipment you use.

Completely naturalistic, this presentation of a home video delivers realistic dialogue, zoom-happy camerawork and real-time wind filled audio. Editing has to be commended for presenting what appears to be one continuous take and the death fall at the end is also impressive. Structurally well developed with rising drama and there is a nice payoff with the taped over wedding at the end. As with the rest, acting is superbly representational of the average couple, the victimized photographer and the angry dad. Comedy comes from the couples banter, Sarah Head and director turned cameraman Simon Hook, and their all to real reaction to the unfolding scenario.

Overall, an inspiring film with such a simple idea that you'll kick yourself for not thinking it up yourself.

Best Bit: The over the cliff filming.

Worst Bit: The naturalistic camerawork means you don't get a full view of what is happening.

Final thought: Wonder how they did that cliff plunge?
