Holy Island ★★☆☆☆

Review of 'Holy Island' which can be found here at North East Movies.

Length: 01:00
Written by Deborah Buchan and directed by Dawn Furness
Genre: Horror
Date: 2008
Rating: ★★☆☆

Logline: A poem about death is narrated over symbolic images.

I'm not a fan of poetry at the best of times, especially unoriginal ones about death, and even less so when it's portrayed in the form of pretentious black and white film. This film reeks of amateur student: the time lapse photography, presenting images on screen at the same time as having someone speak the very words, 'improvised' soundtrack, overuse of the same special effects, etc. None of which adds up to anything very interesting.

Cliff Burnett does a fair job of narration. We applaud his Geordie accent on words such as "rocky" and "stony" in particular. He is about the most interesting thing on screen, unfortunately. The rest of static shots comprise of the staple dead bird, time lapse clouds and coastal scenery that frequent sea side shoots.

As for genre, I found this advertised in the horror category. A slot that this film doesn't fit. The only thing horrifying about it is how boring it is. And for that very reason I feel that this film should deservedly fit into Art House very well. No prizes for guessing this wasn't my cup of tea but let's start to think who the target audience actually is for this film? It has to be for a minority, that's for sure. (not that there is anything wrong with that) I'm sure whoever the grey depressed grandiloquents are will enjoy it. I didn't.

Best Bit: The title font.

Worst Bit: The time I lost while watching it.

Final thought: What a shame for the friends and family members who had to watch this in support.
