Five Card Stud ★★★☆☆

Review of 'Five Card Stud which can be found here on Daily Motion.

Length: 07:53
Written & directed by Robin King
Genre: Comedy
Date: 2009
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Logline: A group of lads playing poker unravel the reasons behind tensions between two of the players.

This is quite enjoyable if you're able to get past the first two and a half minutes. There's nice naturalistic banter between these guys which creates good comedy. The film suffers from the poor set up and the plot doesn't really start until mid point. Before which, we've had to watch a guy who irritates his fellow mates, and us, by being slow and listen to another character who irritates his fellow mates, and us, with his rubbish mobster accent. Dangerous tactics as this may put off people from watching further.

Other plot points that were a bit dodgy were the continual leaving of the room to get beers even though no one actually drinks any. This was probably something that worked well in the script but didn't quite translate onto screen very good. Some performances are stronger and more consistent than others but each character has at least one redeeming comic line or action delivery which shows promise. Dialogue is strong and I enjoyed the tangents which emulated realistic chat which developed character and didn't inhibit plot.

With a home made feel, the living room lighting, although helping to create mood, tends to white wash a bit. Sound levels also fluctuate in parts. Camera has done well considering the confining location which is clearly someones flat. Perhaps a little more time could have been spent on set design. I did however, really like the font used on the titles.

Best Bit: The sneaky twist and John's (think it's John?) reaction.

Worst Bit: Tedious set up scene.

Final thought: Lava lamp. Haven't seen one of them in ages.
