Lions ★★★☆☆

Review of 'Lions' which can be found here on the BBC Film Network.

Length: 02:33
Genre: Music Video
Date: 2009
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Logline: A bedraggled man gets drawn towards a mysterious shack in the middle of nowhere.

This is a mixed media short which combines live action and 2D animation. With a large emphasis on fantasy, the plot is pretty obscure which somehow matches the equally baffling song lyrics. It doesn't even look like the filmmakers know what this is about by the the written summary provided, "A man is beckoned..." Robert Williamson is said man, and certainly looks the part. There's no dialogue to gauge his full acting ability and he role doesn't particularly demand much more than a continual manic expression, but Williamson pulls it off well enough.

It's stylistically different. A crumpled paper masked layer is a nice way to add a grainy texture to the black and white footage and the staggered playback mimics the pace of the hand drawn animation. Job well done on the lighting too, with the varied tones and good depth. The animation is kept simple and the roughly drawn look suits the finish added to the live shots. Invariably, the best aspect is the music. The track comes from a band called Jonquil

Overall, the film may be weird but it fits the music's rustic mood. I liked the music and could have done with a longer track. Not sure if the unusual content of the film would please all audiences though as I hadn't a clue what was happening story-wise.

Best Bit: Soundtrack.

Worst Bit: WTF is it all about?

Final thought: And the award for worst hairstyle goes to...
